Basic Training Equipment
For beginners we start with a wooden sword (Bokken 木剣 / Bokuto 木刀) and a wooden staff (Jo 杖). With just a Bokuto and a Jo you will be able to learn Kendo kihon, Kendo Kata, also the Jodo Kihon and Jodo Kata. In order to learn iaido, students will need a wooden sword with a scabbard (saya 鞘). As for the clothing, you will be able to train with a set of Kendo uniform or iaido uniform in our dojo. Knee pads are recommended for kneeling iaido kata.
Standard Training Equipment
Although we are a dojo that teaches the Japanese Sword Art, we do not encourage the use of sharp blades and metallic swords before you have accumulated sufficient experience in training. We have progressive increments in training equipment so that beginners start with a wooden sword (Bokken 木剣 / Bokuto 木刀). Then move onto a wooden sword with a scabbard (saya 鞘)...... etc.
Advanced Training Equiptment
As our practitioners accumulate knowledge in the art and skills becomes polished, we progress in our teaching toward Jodo (杖道) and the classical curriculum (Koryu 古流), which incorporates the use of short jo (walking stick), shorter katana (Wakizashi 脇差) and dagger / knife (Tanto 短刀)... etc. While it may not be essential FOR beginners to acquire all these training equipment, you are likely to see advanced practitioners using a wider varieties of weapons in the dojo depending on their level and curriculum of practice.
Protective Gears / Armour
Essentially we are a none-contact martial arts dojo. We teach Kendo Kihon and Kata as well as Koryu Kenjutsu. However, we do not have regular practice in free form sparing or Kendo sessions. Occasionally we have special sessions under careful supervision of our teaching team to ensure that we eliminate the likelihood of injuries caused by free form sparing. Please note "It is not necessary to acquire a set of armour for training in this dojo"
